Today was a day of much activity for myself and [info]karanina. The biggest part was checking out the Secrets Revealed Exhibition at Auckland Museum. For those of you who haven't heard about this, it isn't so much an actual exhibition as a chance for the Museum to pull a few old items out of storage and put them on display.

[sugstherogue]
I bought this lovely new corset and unfortunately its not the size that was stated, so im selling it on

its size medium, id say it would fit a size 12/14 nicely

its red and black and made of a lovely silky material, it has bones in it but they are not rigged steel bones nor are they flimsy high street basque like bones.

Ive got it up on ebay f(i think thats a real bargain at buy it now price £30 but you can also put a bid on the item)

So I felt like I should update for some reason [Jul. 19th, 2008|08:40 pm]

zeffie
Since I don't think I've actually done a proper update all year. So the highlights of my life this year has been:
  • Deciding I dislike my current job intensely and making a commitment to myself to actually do something about it rather than just complaining
  • Yet again quitting smoking but this time actually succeeding
  • Meeting the most amazing man ever to be born (well in my eyes anyways)
  • Learning to bake and ending up being quite good at it
  • Having a grizzly bear try to give me a hug through the wall of his enclosure in Minnesota Zoo.
It doesn't sound like much when written down but so far this year has lived up to everything I hoped it would be. I've never been happier. I don't think it would be possible to be happier. Well, maybe a bit happier - but I only say that because I know that what I have waiting for me over the rest of the year will make the grin on my face even bigger.

Anyways, I babble. Now it is time to get back to packing.

The HHS Contraception/Abortion Proposal [Jul. 19th, 2008|03:55 am]

[mood | pissed off]
[music |Tarot -- Ice]

Following up on the last couple of entries here,  as you may have heard, the HHS has proposed redefining contraception as abortion.

Since some people assumed feminist bloggers were making this up or overreacting, the actual document is here in .pdf format.

Almost all of the text is below.  This gets really long, so I have cut it.  I have bolded the parts I feel warrant especial concern, and I have made comments in red throughout.

If my understanding of something is faulty, that's probably because I am not a lawyer.  I think, however, I have a pretty good idea of where this is going.

So.  Now you see why I'm so worried.  That is subtle, insidious, and entirely horrifying.

What is just as bad is that I had not known that there were already federal laws in place which specifically prevent medical institutions from refusing to hire people who will not perform their jobs.

People, I understand conscience.  I really do.  I don't want people to have to do things they do not want to do.  I strongly feel, therefore, that people who cannot cope with abortion, who object to contraception, should not be in medicine.  Those two things are cornerstones of health care, as well as basic human freedom.  Anyone who would deny them to a patient based on their conscience does not have anyone's best interests at heart.  Only their own.

I also understand these people do not want to have anything to do with what they see as taking a human life.  Again, if that is the case, if a person's grasp of biology and medicine is so weak that one can actually believe that a fertilized egg is of equal or greater importance than a woman's right to determine the course of her own life, I do not believe that person has any place whatsoever in medicine.

I'm not really open to debate on these points, and I am warning everyone of that well in advance.  If you wish to debate, do so in your own journals.  That is what they are for.

This, if passed, would be disastrous, and I urgently request that you do something.  Write a letter, speak to someone, pass the word around.  This must not go unchallenged.  Too much ground has been lost already.  This is a very real danger to the reproductive freedom of all human beings.  If this sort of thing is allowed to spread, it is going to affect you, your siblings, your children, your friends, everyone you know.

Please write or make a phone call.  Please do something.

Please.  These are your rights, too.

Quick Michigan Kitty News Update [Jul. 19th, 2008|03:12 am]

[music |Within Temptation -- Stand My Ground]

Well, [info]celticmistress stayed with me overnight on Wednesday, and has now moved on to Michigan. The last I heard, early this morning, was that she was home; I am assuming that she's been sacked out or recovering ever since. I know I would be after a drive like that.

A wonderful foster home has been found and, to the best of my knowledge, [info]celticmistress's cats will be there very soon. That part is a little out of my hands at this point, given that they're a long way off.

But I thought I would let you know that she left a nasty situation despite a critical lack of support from key individuals and some incredibly annoying delays, and has successfully returned home with self and cats intact.

Thank you to everyone who helped spread the word. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This goes way above and beyond anything I had expected, and I am insanely, incredibly grateful for your help, because I could not have done this without youall. I don't know who it was who forwarded the link to the foster couple, or who forwarded it to them. I don't know how it happened. I do know that without the collective effort it wouldn't have happened at all, and my friend might very well still be stuck down there.

And, Babe, I don't think I said it the other night, but I will say it now, right here in front of everyone. I am so, so proud of you.

Love you, babe.

Um, oops? I went to have a little nap at 3.30pm, expecting to doze for an hour or so, and have only just now woken up.

I am a bit tired for two reasons: last night we were out late at a fundraising trivia night for [info]laputain's soccer team, at which we PWNED MIGHTILY and won the quiz and a few spot prizes, and today I was busy at the SPCA doing canine training.

The training today was way better than the orientation two weeks ago. For one thing, there were massive amounts more PUPPIES, and if some of those puppies were inhabiting an extremely stench-ridden run that we needed to clean, or were very, very yappy then, well. Still cute. I discovered to my relief that cleaning the dog runs involves the use of a high-pressure hose and just kind of....swishing all the poop down the drains.

I managed to nobly restrain myself from taking home EVERY SINGLE PUPPY AND DOG, even the skinny puppy in the quarantine area who was wearing a knitted jumper or the big fluffy dog who looked like a bear. I am looking forward to getting my roster so I can get started properly, especially the bits where you take a dog out for a work for no other reason than just to hang out with it.

Anyway, after spending the morning at the SPCA I had to go out to the Warehouse to pick up some gumboots (compulsory for wearing when cleaning the dog runs) and managed to find some that were blue with flowers on (the pink stripey ones didn't fit, alas) and also some baking things for making mince pies. We are having a mid-winter Christmas dinner at work, and I'm making mince pies. Having acquired my mother's Alison Holst recipe (which is older than I am) I realised that I don't actually have a tray for making mince pies. I should really be using one that is shallower than a normal muffin tin, but is it possible to find anything to buy that is not either for making huge muffins, really huge muffins, or itsy-bitsy cupcakes? No, no it is not. I'm scouring Trademe for patti tins, but having no luck so far.

Anyway, after all the above I got home exhausted and that is what let to my massive nap. I never nap. I hope I'm not coming down with something - there were a couple of people at work with colds and they laughed when I said I hoped they didn't give it to me because I don't get sick leave for a few more months, but I wasn't joking!

Autism is a racket? [Jul. 18th, 2008|08:51 pm]

On his syndicated talk radio show, The Savage Nation, Michael Savage (real name: Michael Weiner, which is appropriate, because only a weiner would believe the stuff he spews), the third most listened to talk show host behind Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, and a bomb thrower like no other, called the disorder known as Autism, "a fraud" and "a racket."

He went further.

"I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot."

Hitchens And Waterboarding [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:57 pm]

[mothwentbad]
So, it's nice of Christopher Hitchens to unconditionally condemn waterboarding as torture... Oh, wait. What's this?

On this analysis, any call to indict the United States for torture is therefore a lame and diseased attempt to arrive at a moral equivalence between those who defend civilization and those who exploit its freedoms to hollow it out, and ultimately to bring it down. I myself do not trust anybody who does not clearly understand this viewpoint.

So, uh... I don't know, you all seem pretty trustworthy to me. I'm sure you understand this viewpoint. Maybe you can explain it to me.

No, that title doesn't mean what you think...

I got hit by a car while crossing at a Pedestrian crossing on Great North Road on Wednesday night. Lady apparently turned into Great North Road neglecting to see th Red Traffic light up ahead, and clipped me in the centre lane next to the car that HAD stopped for the lightd.

I now have a fractured humerus, and that is being held together by freshly installed platinum plate - Long live the new Flesh!

So yeah, at my parents for a couple of days (was discharged from the hospital yesterday) but don't see this slowing me down too much. The injury means no cast, just a sling for about 12 weeks, usual risks of infection etc, and probably greatly reduced mobility/increased stiffness in right shoulder for many months. Casualties will likely be my weekly social soccer game, miniature painting, and typing speed. Otherwise I don't predict too much of a negative impact from the whole event. (at least not for me - I imagine the careless driver from Pukekohe who hit me is going to have comparatively much more restricted mobility in the seemingly likely event that they take her license away for a while)

All in all getting hit by cars is no fun, but I do feel pretty fortunate that my injury is pretty mild (considering there was a fresh amputee in the bed next to me in Auckland Hospital who seemed to be taking things pretty well, I feel very fortunate!)

My latest corset comission=extremely shaped underbust [Jul. 18th, 2008|09:11 pm]

corsetry

[batty]
Here is a pic of the latest custom corset I finished. It was made for a local burlesque dancer, Calla Doll, and has a very extreme shape. Finished measurements are 27 underbust, 18 waist, 36 hip. It's made of dark pink satin with lighter pink satin outer casings and has flase hip gussets (pieces cut shaped like the dome of the hips, but are not true gussets). It has two sets of loose straps (lined with the same fabric) she is going to tuck the back straps into the front of the corset to eliminate back fattage and tie the front ones around her neck halter style, weird request I know, but when she tried it on it looked just fine. She can also criss cross them and tie the fronts and back together. It's backed with thin batiste and lined with medium weight cotton trigger and of course has waist tape and bi-directional back lacing. Boned with 1/4 flat steels on all the seams. Outer Casings are decorative only, bones are actually sewn on the inside of the corset lining.

Corset has a few pulls/wrinkles in the photo this is due to the following factors:

A) It doesn't fit the pillow and is being pulled funny, and also it's extreme waist to hip ratio was a beeyotch to fit together nice and totally smoothly.
B) Is SATIN (Satan)
C)It was made for a burlesque dancer who wanted a lot of movement and a very lightweight corset so it is not heavily backed/lined
and
D) Did I mention It's hellish satin?? Good. :)

I like how it came out overall but I still loath sewing satin.

Also I would love to have an 18/36 corseted waist to hip ratio but alas I live in the land of 28/44 :)

Hello again.

This weekend in a panic for shoes for my bustle dress for Costume College (is anyone else going?) I found these. They're incredibly comfortable and they're on sale. I'm not sure it comes any better than that. I splurged and ended up getting them in all four colors. I'll wear them everyday. Tee antique grey is ALOT more grey/silver then the picture, but the others pretty much look the same. And the good news is they go from size 4.5- 14. Which means that if you're like me and don't wear an 8.5, you're super excited!

I thought I would just pass on the find!

With all the questions wandering around the various corsetry communities about sewing cupped corsets lately I am thinking it is time for me to take some free time to do the 2nd part of my cupped corset making tutorial, the one about different construction methods and sizing etc.
Is there enough interest on here that you guys would like to me to go ahead with that? It takes some time to do one (since I need to pretty much make a mock-up for the visuals) but I would be glad to share if you guys think it would be something helpful to add to this community.

Montreal Psychobilly madmen here, and what a fun record. Spindly but robust country guitar has been used to great effect in Goth since the Neffs blew life into the idea, and covered it in modern dust, but if anyone’s going to use it with dexterity it’ll be a rockabilly or Psychobilly band, so ‘Guilty’ nips off gleefully with some thin, gleaming guitar. It’s a taut, basic rhythm and wiggly tune, with some charismatic but lightweight vocals as if Johnny Toxik respects the song and doesn’t want to dominate.

‘Follow’ shows from Custom Pat’s manic drums just why Psychobilly was such a hit with Punk kids when it appeared, because it has the same striped-down approach as American hardcore. Brief hyperventilating rhythm surges and a vocal melody verging close to Lemmy (seriously!) collides with a real jaunty curvature and you’ll be singing along like a lunatic before you realise. An eerie wind blows across ‘House By The Cemetery’ which proves to be as rowdy as it is dowdy. Flipper’s bass bosses the fragrant, chant-boosted ‘Sunday.’ A song like ‘The Offer’ just keeps busy and rumbles along sleekly, but doesn’t carry the same weight or impact, although the scratchy guitar is cute. ‘Snakepit’ is a direct and intense linear instrumental, surging over rhythmical potholes.

Hi, I am autistic and lecture on that at Kent university. My friend there runs a course on autism and asked me if I knew of any useful writings/resources that would help explain autism to begginners who have no knowledge of us. The students are going to become the ones who "care" for us. What would you like them to know?

I have compiled a list of internet sites for them to check out thusly:

http://web.syr.edu/~jisincla/index.html These essays.

http://www.autistics.org/library/ These essays.

http://isnt.autistics.org/ This for some perspective (I don't know if they will get it though - they should try)

These places for (contraversial but representative)opinion:

Useful links - http://www.aspergianpride.com/

Best place for research, rly good! - http://www.neurodiversity.com/main.html

BOOK- A Real Person by Gunnilla Gerland.

Do you agree? Are these good? Can you think of any specific essays/books/youtube videos/resources etc... that really explain our/your point of veiw on the nature of autism and our autistic experience to people who are in training to help us?

Thanks in anticipation (I know you will have lots of ideas!)

Howdy,
I helped to organize an urban 24 hour bike race in Milwaukee, and as part of the race we are including a pancake breakfast.  Between the riders and volunteers, we are expecting to make pancakes for 100-150 people.  I am looking for a very simple recipe that can be made by a group of volunteers from the neighborhood who have no experience in vegan cooking.  We are able to get all of the ingredients donated as long as they are non-perishable, so I am trying to avoid recipes with soymilk.  Any ideas?

I have never organized a meal for this many people, so any tips in that area would be much appreciated.

also, for any of the bikers or community organizers out there who are interested, the website for the race is www.riverwest24.com

Nettles are all over the place this time of year. So had to try to make this, well worth a try as nettles even if your in the city center should be growing somewhere nearby.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stinging_nettle

1 bag of freshly young nettle leaves
1 large onion, diced
1 clove garlic
3 potatoes, diced
1 vegetable stock cube
4 (or to taste) desert spoons of plain soy yogurt
A dash of olive oil

Pop the onion, garlic and potatoes in a large saucepan. Fry them for about 4 minutes in olive oil . While that's doing wash nettle leaves well and add them. Then stock cube. Boil for about 15 minutes until the potatoes are cooked. Then add your soy yogurt and liquidise. The business, the kids loved it too.

the never ending quest for the perfect pattern [Jul. 18th, 2008|03:13 pm]

[mood | curious]

Hello all,
I have been lurking for quite a while and have noticed that many of the questions that arise are on the topic of how to make room for breasts in a corset pattern, whether making room at the top or adding cups. I know there are several different approaches such as bringing a mid-breast corset up higher, adding gussets, making an under-bust with incorporated cups, and having a sweetheart-type neckline that has the boning go all the way to the top, but what patterns are best to start off with? I tried to meld the neckline/top portion of the simplicity 5006 pattern with the laughing moon dore. This worked to some extent but wasn’t the most flattering result. I was hoping all the talent on this board might have ideas about which patterns are the best to modify for cups, or more of a defined breast area?
What I have gleaned so far:
Laughing Moon Dore can be brought up over the bust
Laughing Moon Silverado and simplicity 9769 have gussets
TV 110 and Past Patterns are shaped with cup size in mind
What do you all suggest?

We're thinking of fitting an elevator to Rainbow Bridge: Captain Benjamin, the herewith-illustrated bunny's companion, died and was buried today with full military honours next to Wes, Willow and Mr Algernon Montcrieff III Esq.* in the garden.

This is not a tragedy. Benji was so fit, healthy and happy that it was only in the last few days that I thought, wait, is he okay? He looks a little tired... in retrospect, Internet diagnosis suggests that the noticeable symptom was a "fatty eye", which is basically harmless but perhaps also a potential indicator of heart problems, which themselves are difficult to identify in guinea pigs.

He was exactly four years old, which is a very reasonable innings for a guinea pig (official line is 4-7 years, we read). Under recent circumstances, it's strangely comforting and almost a positive feeling to have a pet die of quick, internal, virtually unavoidable causes at the correct time of life.

The modding begins! [Jul. 18th, 2008|02:47 pm]

[tea_chan]
Not long ago, I posted a few pictures of myself in my steam-gear, what I had together anyway.

And now, it's time to move forward. This weekend, my brother and I would like to begin working on some of our steamy gear and accessories, hopefully to have a bit of it in time for Connecticon at the end of the month. (If anyone else is going, let me know!)

A few days ago, he and I bought some wonderful welding goggles, and we have a bunch of Nerf guns. (Mavericks, longshots, and the C5 I think it's called.) So, we wanted to get a-working on some modding these things to make them steamy. We've loads of ideas for what to di with it all, but since I'm doing the painting I had a question.

How do some of you excellent craftsmen do your painting? Any tips and techniques? How do you age your mods? How do you paint something to look like wood? Basically anything you can give me. I actually used to have a couple of lovely painting tutorials for just such an occassion saved as bookmarks, but with my laptop on the fritz, I can't get to them.

Any help and suggestions you could give me would be wonderfully helpful! I'll be sure to post lots of pictures as things are finished.

X-posted all about.

I think it's a good idea to do a blog recommendation-sharing post from time to time [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:56 am]

feminist

[emily_arete]
Reading blogs has helped me a lot in developing my feminist and anti-racist thinking. I know this community is full of people who read good blogs and want to give and get recommendations. I thought I'd give a list of the blogs I currently read, in the hopes that they will help others. I'd also love some blog recommendations - general or in the specific categories I'll ask about below. Apologies to those of you who know about most of these and think this is "duh!" stuff, but I think most people will find at least a few they haven't heard of. Also apologies if you disagree with my assessment of any given blog - if you think it's something really problematic, if I let any privilege slip that I didn't notice, or if I should add to a description, let me know right away and I'll edit the post.
long list! )
So, here are the things I want recommendations for: do you know of more feminist motherhood blogs? What categories of feminism have I overlooked? Blogs about disability? Blogs about how to best oppose, deal with, and work toward replacing capitalism within a capitalist society (especially if these are also good at taking racism into account)? Or anything else you just think is awesome?

ETA: folks, my bookmarks list just got twice as long as it was. Thank you all so much.

I'm not sure how to access the archive recordings on the BBC site as I don't have the right player on my pc, hence the fairly rudimentary url I provide, but I want to recommend that anybody who can has a listen to the play broadcast yesterday (Thursday 17th), narrated by Bill Nighy, entitled I Wish To Apologise For My Part in the Apocalypse, as it was brilliant. A man initially bemoans the changes in his wife's behaviour and obsession with the moon until she admits she is romantically inclined towards it and, this being the twist, the moon is reciprocating her feelings. The moon isn't, as she first suggests, getting bigger, it is in fact getting nearer. The Earth is in great danger, and in a rare demonstration of British ire a local resident's group, alerted to the news that the moon is coming for her, storm round to complain, demanding the pair get out. He tells them not to be so ridiculous and they all leave, muttering. (Not quite the Hollywood approach.) The ending is a bit of a surprise, but the whole thing was a delight.

Probably old hat around here, but worth a look...

A 19th century Vampire Hunting Kit?

The entire Sandberg Collection is worth exploring.

latex corsets [Jul. 18th, 2008|03:07 pm]

corsetry

[kumimonster]
so usually i'm just a lurker in here
and i do comment once in a while
but i guess there's eventually going to be first post

i'm just sitting here at the HWdesign office and they finally updated their shop site with the corset i had them make me a few weeks ago. ;-)

They usually make heavy rubber corsets and they end up being quite costly.
Here's a way to simply get the more out of the piece (and save some money) by designing one with an interchangeable panel :-)

i'm posting it in here because i really do love this thing and i'm quite excited about it :D

photos under the cut cuz well, boobs n some bitsy bits might show...

OMFG I am devastated you have no idea it happened soooooooo fast! like within less than 2 hours!:( He was on sofa lying around and purring as always and i was brushing him. Then he coughed as if he had a hairball and he got down. Then i went to go in shower and im just getting undressed when mam shouts me. She was like "he cant walk his back legs have gone" :(so i start panicking run down stairs and he was lying there outside trying to stand up and then he started to cry :(

So i picked him up and ran him inside. Then he started to pant prob cause he was stressed and could not breath so well:( so we ran the vet and they said bring him right down. In the car he got so scared he just poohed all over poor mother. The vet put him straight on oxygen and put him in another room and she examined him. Said that she thought he had had a blood clot in his lungs that went to his legs and it caused him to loose all sensation. Then she goes "unfortunately" and at that point i died i knew what she was gonna say. :(So yeah he has gone all in under 2 hours. My head is all over the place i cant get around how he was ok one min and gone the next He was in our lives for 2 years and he brought so much happiness! =[

Hello, Babes...
SO Sorry, I took a bit of a vacation from posting Events for awhile!
The Dog Days of summer are here and, I don't know about you, BUT I feel the itch to get
out and be with my community.
My summer, so far, has been filled with days of diligent work and private creative time.
I must say I'm missing the masses. Please come out and Play!
There are a variety of new events, I have a couple new acts and some revamped, too!
BUT Most seriously... Its summer! Its time to get out and savor the sweat... Many little Fun

moment to take your mind off your worries!
Lord knows our shows are affordable!
I'm involved in a bunch of *Very Special* events to keep you coolly contented and amused
in the heat...Here is the rest of my July:
